Antarctic sea-level rising faster than global rate

A new study of satellite data from the last 19 years reveals that fresh water from melting glaciers has caused the sea-level around the coast of Antarctica to rise by 2cm more than the global average of 6cm. Researchers detected the rapid rise in sea-level by studying satellite scans of a region that spans more than a million square kilometers. The melting of the Antarctic ice sheet and the thinning of floating ice shelves has contributed an excess of around 350 gigatonnes of freshwater to the surrounding ocean.

14 Sea Shepherd Crewmembers Released From Custody Today in the Faroe Islands

14 Sea Shepherd Crewmembers Released From Custody Today in the Faroe Islands

Following Arrests for Attempting to Prevent Slaughter of 33 Pilot Whales, Onshore Crew Court Date Set for Monday; Three Small Boats Detained by the Danish Navy to Be Held ‘as Evidence’ until Boat Crew Returns for Court September 25

A total of 14 volunteer crewmembers of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s pilot whale defense campaign Operation GrindStop 2014 arrested on Saturday in the Faroe Islands today have been released.

As of Sunday morning, all 14 Sea Shepherd crew have been released. The six volunteers from the land team must return to court tomorrow, Monday, September 1. The eight members of the boat team have been told to return to court on September 25. Postponing the court date until that time allows the police to hold the three Sea Shepherd boats until the end of September, as they are being held for "evidence." All video and still camera data cards were removed by police and are still being held. Sea Shepherd attorneys are working to have them returned as well.

The members of the onshore team led by Sea Shepherd USA and the offshore team led by Sea Shepherd France were arrested as they attempted to protect a pod of 33 pilot whales from the brutal mass slaughter known as the “grindadrap” or “grind.”

Sea Shepherd was on the scene immediately, but as the pod was driven in from very close to shore, there was little time to prevent the slaughter. The panicked pilot whales thrashed in the water and could be heard screaming in pain as the water turned red with blood.

“The 14 brave, dedicated volunteers who risked their own safety to put themselves between a pod of pilot whales and their killers have been released today,” said Sea Shepherd Founder Captain Paul Watson. “They are not criminals, but heroes. It is Denmark, an ‘anti-whaling’ EU member nation, that has acted in blatant defiance of the law by protecting this heinous massacre of whales.”

Despite being a member nation of the European Union and subject to laws prohibiting the slaughter of cetaceans, Denmark has officially shown its support of – and now direct collaboration with – the Faroese whalers by sending the Royal Danish Navy to defend this archaic, mass slaughter of whales in the Faroe Islands alongside Faroese police. Denmark’s Navy seized three Sea Shepherd small boats - Loki, the Mike Galesi, and the B.S. Sheen (sponsored by actor Charlie Sheen) – and their crew were arrested and flown to Torshavn by Royal Danish Navy helicopter.

In another sickening display of total disregard for life, the whale killers have left pilot whale meat and fins, believed to be from yesterday’s kill, to rot on the ground. At the whale processing facility, Sea Shepherd volunteers today discovered discarded whale flesh, as well as tiny fins that appear to be from babies taken from their mother’s wombs, simply left as garbage. The crew described the stench in the area of the discarded flesh as “unbearable.” Pregnant female, infant and juvenile whales are often killed in grind hunts, as the Faroese whalers wipe out entire pods and generations at a time.

Sea Shepherd also recently discovered discarded whale flesh from a slaughtered pod of beached bottlenose whales dumped at sea by the Faroese whalers, capturing images and footage with its drone force. Once again, these whalers have shown the deceptiveness of their own claim that they need to eat cetacean meat to survive. If this were true, why would they be dumping whale meat?

Sea Shepherd has led the opposition against the slaughter of cetaceans in the Faroe Islands since the 1980s, and today our goal remains the same: to bring the archaic grind to a complete stop. Launched in June, Operation GrindStop 2014, is Sea Shepherd’s largest Faroe Islands campaign to date. The multi-national land- and sea-based campaign features hundreds of volunteers who will be present in the Faroe Islands over the course of four months to defend pilot whales and other species of small cetaceans from the brutal and archaic mass slaughter known as the “grind.”

This weekend’s slaughter was the first grind hunt to take place in the more than 80 days that Sea Shepherd has patrolled the islands. The campaign spans the traditionally bloodiest months of the hunt season.

CALL TO ACTION: Sea Shepherd is seeking additional volunteers to join the team in the Faroe Islands for the last month of campaign. The deadline for campaign applications is September 10th at 5 pm EST. Anyone interested in volunteering should complete and submit the application found at this link:Grindstop 2014 On-Shore Crew Application.

The Day After the Slaughter

The Day After the Slaughter

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson

Members of the Sea Shepherd boat team are arrested and taken away by Danish Navy helicopter Members of the Sea Shepherd boat team are arrested and taken away by Danish Navy helicopter

Photo: Sea Shepherd
Sea Shepherd volunteers woke up to a bag of dead birds tossed on their doorstep and it is now quite clear that the Danish government has thrown their cards on the table in support of cruelty and slaughter.

During the last 85 days, the Sea Shepherd look-outs on land and the Sea Shepherd boats on the water were able to divert back to sea, three large pods of pilot whales, and for 85 days not a single whale or dolphin was slain in a drive slaughter.

However we all knew that eventually the logistics and the geography would allow for a breach for the whalers to seize their opportunity.

Yesterday the six-person team on Sandoy Island at Sandur spotted six boats leaving the harbor. They immediately informed the closest Sea Shepherd boat crew, the nearest being Bastien Boudoire from France and his crew on the Mike Galesi.

A small pod of 33 pilot whales had been spotted by residents of the small island of Skuvoy, not far from the island of Sandoy.

The whales unfortunately had passed very close and there was little time to divert them.

As the Mike Galesi raced to the scene, the Loki and the B.S. Sheen were called in from their patrols off the island of Suduroy.

The Brigitte Bardot was 52 kilometers to the North and hours away.

The Sandoy team made it to the beach before the whalers arrived. Meanwhile the police at Torshaven scrambled to board Royal Danish Navy helicopters to rush to Sandoy. The Danish Navy dispatched high-speed ridged hulled inflatables to Sandoy in what must have been one of the proudest moments in Danish Naval history. I mean what was the battle of Copenhagen where they lost to Nelson, compared to this valiant and strategically important race to support the whale killers of Sandoy?

As men, women and children flocked to the beach, laughing and cheering as if they were at a birthday party, eager to see and smell the spurting blood, the whales were driven to within 200 metres off the beach.

When the Mike Galesi arrived, the Danish Navy ordered the crew to back off. The same order was given to the arriving Loki and B.S. Sheen. Australian Krystal Keynes in command of the B.S. Sheen did not hear the warning and moved in close to film what was happening with the land crew.

From the time the whales were spotted to the time the whales were driven onto the beach was 25 minutes.

As the land volunteers waded into the water to defend the whales they were tackled and arrested by the police. The boat-crews were chased down by the “brave and illustrious” Danish Navy. In all, fourteen Sea Shepherd volunteers were arrested and transported by Royal Danish Naval helicopters to Torshaven and detained. No report on charges have been released. All Sea Shepherd cameras have been seized.

There is no disgrace in a group of unarmed compassionate conservationists being overtaken and captured by a member nation of NATO. They have the guns, the machines, the money and the men to do it of course. It is in fact an act of profound courage that they waded into the fray in the face of such a frenzy of anger and such a force of arms.

The image taken by Sea Shepherd photographer Nils Greskewitz of three Sea Shepherd volunteers forced to their knees before a Danish Military helicopter will be iconic.

Sea Shepherd is proud of each and every volunteer on the Faroe Islands.

According to the new rules no unauthorized people may approach the killing area.

Section 11, Paragraph 1: that an area also on land may be considered as grind herding area. The magistrate has resolved, that no unauthorized people may come closer than 1 mile from the grind. From land is grind-area where unauthorized persons must stay away. On shore, the police will cordon off the grind area with strips, so that only people, who participate in the catch, may enter. Catching men has to be able to work undisturbed by unauthorized persons.

On the killing beach were numerous children. When Sea Shepherd land crew leader Rosie Kunneke inquired as to why they were there and asked if the Grind Master has authorized that children be allowed on the beach, the police said that the only unauthorized people are Sea Shepherd crew. All others are authorized. The police appeared to not have cordoned off the grind area prior to the arrests.

Apparently in the Faroe Islands, the whalers get to dictate the laws that the police are obliged to enforce.

The confirmed 14 people (8 men and 6 women) arrested are:

2. Jérôme Veegaert (French)

11. Nikki Botha (South Africa)

12. Monnique Rossouw (South Africa)

13. Sergio Toribio (Spain)

14. Alexandra Sellet (France)

The Land and boat crew heard the whales screaming in agony which certainly contradicts the Faroese claim that the slaughter is painless despite even the stress of the drive.

An entire family group of pilot whales was massacred on that beach at Sandur and Denmark has exposed the fact that the Danish government is collaborating with the whalers. Denmark is prohibited by European Union regulations from supporting whaling. This incident gives Sea Shepherd plenty of evidence to push for action from the European Parliament. The Faroes receive massive EU subsidies through Denmark, the only place in Europe subsided by the European Union that does not have to abide by European law because although Denmark is part of the EU, the Faroes claim to be independent of Denmark and thus not part of the EU.

According to the European postal services, the Faroes are indeed a part of Denmark because they will not allow letters addressed to the Faroes unless the country name of Denmark is written on the envelope.

The Faroes are to Denmark what bogus scientific research is to Japan, simply a loophole to get around conservation law.

Many Danes continue to argue that Denmark is not a whaling nation. It appears that the actions of the Danish Navy and the Danish police demonstrate that Denmark is very much a whaling nation.

Last night a bag of dead birds was thrown at the door of one of the houses rented by Sea Shepherd in the Faroe Islands.

The disrespect that this island of dolphin, whale, puffin, and fulmar killers has for marine wildlife is horrendous. When they say that this is all part of their “culture” we should stop and think for a moment just where this word “culture” comes from.

A culture is an environment from which things grow and like cultures of bacteria it is not always a good thing. In fact what is occurring in the Faroese can be viewed as a cult of killing and cruelty.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is dedicated to eradicating such despicable and obscene cults. Unfortunately in today’s world, opposition to cruelty and slaughter is considered criminal in cultures that condone such evils like bull-fighting, dog-fighting, seal-clubbing, dolphin killing and this particular bizarre and odious Faroese activity that they call the Grindadrap which literally translates as whale murder.

The Sea Shepherd volunteers on the Faroes are dedicated and compassionate people who have traveled to these remote islands at the own expense to oppose an evil that should no longer exist on this planet.

Tomorrow more volunteers will travel to the only other place on the planet where such a horrendous slaughter takes place – Taiji, Japan — as the six-month killing season gets underway there.

These are the two most savage places in the world for dolphins and whales and when you consider that of seven billion people in the world, there are less than 60,000 living in these two different places where such agonizing cruelty is inflicted against species that the rest of the world loves and cares for, it can certainly be seen that the cult of pain and death that is the foundation of these two perverse cultures is an aberration and thus a disgrace to the human race. Sea Shepherd is well aware of the fact there are Faroese people who oppose the heinous grind. Now is the time for them to stand up and let their voices be heard to once and for all bury this tradition of bloodlust that stains their nation.

Sea Shepherd Crewmembers Arrested For Intervening Against Brutal Faroese Pilot Whale ‘Grind’ Hunt

Sea Shepherd Crewmembers Arrested For Intervening Against Brutal Faroese Pilot Whale ‘Grind’ Hunt

Denmark, an Anti-Whaling Member Nation of the European Union, Shows Support for Slaughter of Whales

Photo: Sea Shepherd
Fourteen Sea Shepherd Conservation Society volunteer crewmembers of pilot whale defense campaign Operation GrindStop 2014 were arrested today on the Faroese island of Sandoy, as they entered the water to defend pilot whales from the brutal mass slaughter known as “grindadrap” or “grind” – putting themselves directly between a pod of 33 whales and their killers.

Despite being a member nation of the European Union and subject to laws prohibiting the slaughter of cetaceans, Denmark has officially shown its support of — and now direct collaboration with — the Faroese whalers by sending the Danish Navy to defend this archaic, mass slaughter of whales in the Faroe Islands alongside Faroese police.

Sea Shepherd was on the scene immediately with both the land team and small boat crews present. However, the pilot whale pod was driven in by boats from very close to shore, and there was little time to prevent the slaughter.

Sea Shepherd has confirmed that six members of its onshore team as well as eight members of the small boat team have been arrested. In addition, three Sea Shepherd small boats – Loki, the Mike Galesi, and the B.S. Sheen (sponsored by actor Charlie Sheen) – have all been seized by the Danish Navy.

Among the Sea Shepherd volunteers arrested was Sergio Toribio of Spain, who endured a violent assault in the Faroe Islands just last weekend. Sergio was pulled from a car where he was monitoring for the presence of pilot whales along with a fellow Sea Shepherd volunteer, and was punched repeatedly in the face and suffered a broken finger. Sergio responded admirably, only trying to cover his face, and showing no violence in return.

“The Faroese whalers brutally slaughtered an entire pod of 33 pilot whales today — several generations taken from the sea — and Denmark is complicit in the killing,” said actor Charlie Sheen. “I am proud that a vessel bearing my name was there and did all it could to try to stop this atrocity.”

Sheen added, "The 40-foot Zodiac called the 'BS SHEEN' that I donated to Mr. Watson's tireless and heroic efforts, has been shamefully seized. This level of insidious and vicious corruption must be dealt with swiftly and harshly."

“I am extremely proud of Sea Shepherd volunteers who for 85 days have patrolled day and night to protect the dolphins and whales in the waters around the Faroe Islands. Denmark has no business in the anti-whaling European Union if it is going to sanction and enable the Danish Navy to protect these killers,” said Sea Shepherd Founder Captain Paul Watson.

Here is an excerpt from a commentary about the horrific slaughter written by Captain Watson titled “Slaughter and Loathing on Sandoy as 33 Whales Die in Agony, and Nine Sea Shepherd Volunteers are Arrested by Faroese Police and Danish Navy.”

“…Now that this slaughter has taken place, we can mention that over the last 85 days, Sea Shepherd boat crews have deflected three pods of whales away from the island before the killers could spot them. Unfortunately covering 18 islands is a difficult task, but I am proud of the fact that our volunteers saved those whales and made a valiant attempt to save these 33.

The positive side of this encounter is we now have evidence to implicate the Danish government and Sea Shepherd will take this evidence to the European Parliament to demand that action be taken against Denmark for collaboration with an illegal slaughter of whales. No European member of the EU may be involved with whaling, and although the Faroe Islands are not a member of the EU, they receive massive subsidies from the EU through Denmark. The Faroese may be exempt but Denmark is not and now we have the evidence that pilot whale blood in on the hands of Danish sailors and Danish Police. What is rotten in the Faroes is also very much rotten in Denmark.”
