Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis Study of the Applications and Characterisation of Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles have proven to be one of the most versatile and adaptable varieties of nanoparticle, and are subsequently among the most frequently researched.

Applications range from the biological to the material, and include nanomedicine, drug delivery, cancer diagnostics, biological scaffolds, biosensors, contrast agents, catalysts, and CMP slurries for the manufacturing of microprocessors.

This wide ranging application space is made possible by their versatile optical properties, compatibility with a variety of surface chemistries, and their well-studied synthesis and preparation.

Our Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA) technology utilizes the properties of both light scattering and Brownian motion in order to obtain the particle size distribution of samples in liquid suspension. Here we present examples of different types of gold nanoparticle samples characterized by NTA.

Exploring ocean waters to characterize atmospheric aerosols

Aerosols are collections of fine particles, either biological or of other types, in suspension in a gaseous medium. They play a major role in cloud formation and therefore have a strong impact on climate models. They are however extremely hard to study due to the small size and immense variety of their constituent particles. But researchers have now succeeded in linking the composition of marine biological aerosols -- and therefore their influence on the climate -- to that of bodies of water under them within the Atlantic Ocean, thereby paving the way to an indirect study of these aerosols through water analysis.

The Ocean Lover’s Guide to Contacting Your Elected Officials

The last couple months have been a political and emotional cyclone. I, and I am sure many of you, have too frequently found ourselves enduring the spectrum of reactions from anger to fear to despair. What will become of our jobs? Our science? Our environment? Though I can’t predict the future, I do believe the answers to these questions are firmly dependent on what we do RIGHT NOW.

Thus, I am enacting #8 of our Core Values here at Deep Sea News. “Call to Action. We believe that an open dialogue is just the first step, and seek to turn words into action.” We have done lots of talking, but now is the time to start the doing. My friends, the ocean can’t speak for itself on the congress floor, so here are 5 easy ways you can give the oceans a voice.

1) Make it Easy. Make it Fun. Do it Together.

If you don’t make it easy and fun for yourself, you won’t do it. Start by setting aside 1 hour a week to do your civic duties whether that be writing letters, calling your reps, or just making yourself aware of the issues. Use this POCKET GUIDE to keep track of the points you are passionate about and your elected officials contact info. Make it fun by thinking of innovative ways to get your representatives attention or decorating your post cards. Creativity is key to sending a memorable message. Join a group of friends* to hold yourself accountable in contacting your representatives and to open larger discussions about the issues.

*Friends+Wine=Extra Fun

2) Tell Your Ocean Story.

Members of Congress and other elected officials need real life stories to tell to make their case against a policy or budget. Share your stories with them in ways that will grab their attention. Maybe through a video or a photo or artwork. The ocean is a beautiful place, perhaps you send them 50 cards- one with a portion of a larger mural they can staple up in the office. Again I reiterate BE CREATIVE. Use the power of social media to your advantage. Remember Congress goes into recess soon and it’s good to go to your Town Hall meetings prepared.

3) #OurEPA

Join the 500 Women Scientists in their support of the Environmental Protection Agency through the #OurEPA campaign. Send postcards to EPA offices to thank them, but also to Congress to enforce the importance of the EPA and what they do. Find out how here.

If you are a lady scientist, might I even suggest starting or joining a 500WSPod in your area? Or if you have some extra time in your 1 hour a week of civic duties, check out this and this.

4) NOAA

Just in case you were unaware….the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association helps you do you everyday. In the proposed budget, NOAA doesn’t fair too well. You NEED them and right now they NEED you too. Call your reps with the following or put it on a billboard outside their offices. We can’t reiterate this enough….here it is one more time thanks to @southernfriedscience:

“Hello,

My name is [NAME] and I am a constituent of [CONGRESSPERSON/SENATOR].

I’m calling to ask [CONGRESSPERSON/SENATOR] to oppose any reduction in the budget for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NOAA provides essential services to the American people, including weather services, coastal resilience, hurricane monitoring, and fisheries management. Programs like SeaGrant are the lifeblood of coastal communities, providing education, job training, and research grants to fund local development. NOAA’s Hurricane Center is critical for tracking hurricanes. One-third of the US economy relies upon services provided by NOAA. Any reduction in NOAA’s budget would be catastrophic to the United States’ coastal economy.

Thank you.

**If your livelihood depends on NOAA, consider adding “I am a [FISHERMAN/BUSINESS OWNER/AQUACULTURIST/ETC] in [CONGRESSPERSON/SENATOR]’s district and my livelihood and family depend on the services that NOAA provides.”

If you are feeling extra feisty and passionate, might I recommend sending this same letter to every member of the appropriations committee? Here and Here.

5) #IAmSeagrant

Recently, our own Jarrett Byrnes put a call out for stories from people influenced by the Sea Grant program. This is an excellent way to amplify your message. Additionally, SeaGrant has put out some great letter templates for public use along with fact sheets to send in with your letters. The Sea Grant program “works hard to connect science to communities and address local priorities in water quality, marine ecosystems, STEM education, coastal resiliency, maritime transportation, and much more.”

Sea Grant is completely on the budget chopping block. Many, many people will loose their jobs. Critical research will cease and numerous students and professionals could face significant if not detrimental career set backs. The time to act is now.

BONUS: Choose Your Own Adventure

What have we missed regarding taking action for ocean issues in the current political climate? What innovative ways have you discovered to make your voice heard? Consider this a running document and add your ideas in the comments below. Note our commenting policy. We look forward to the continued dialogue and inspired action.

Sulzer Enjoys Successful Fiscal 2016 Despite Market Challenges

Switzerland-based engineering and manufacturing company Sulzer is pleased to announce that though its currency-adjusted order intake and sales decreased by 2% in 2016, the number of orders processed in every industry but oil and gas (power, water, general industries) experienced an increase.

Order intake gross margin remained broadly stable, while operational profitability declined but remained well within Sulzer's guidance. Free cash flow generation was very robust.

Sulzer Full Potential (SFP) programme savings of CHF 88 million helped to partially offset the impact of severe market headwinds on profitability.

Free cash flow improved markedly to CHF 201 million. For the full year 2017, including acquisitions signed in 2016 and adjusted for currency effects, order intake is expected to grow by 5% to 8% and sales to grow by 3% to 5%.

Sulzer expects operational earnings before interests, taxes, and amortisation (opEBITA) margin at around 8.5% (opEBITA in percent of sales).

The board of directors will propose an unchanged ordinary dividend of CHF 3.50 per share at the Annual General Meeting on 6 April 2017.
Sulzer CEO Greg Poux-Guillaume said, "We did well in a challenging year. Overall, we beat our guidance on all of the key performance indicators: we fulfilled our promises.

"There is still a lot to do, but we are heading in the right direction."

Financial performance in 2016

Decrease in order intake

Overall order intake decreased by 2.0% from 2015 (nominal: - 3.4%). The effect of acquisitions amounted to CHF 110.7 million and currency translation effects to a negative CHF 40.9 million.

Order intake gross margin remained broadly stable due to the increased share of higher-margin aftermarket business offsetting margin erosion in the oil and gas market.

The order backlog decreased to CHF 1 439.1 million (31 December 2015: CHF 1 510.7 million).

Order intake in the oil and gas market decreased significantly. The industry continued to cut costs and capital investments as expected, while oil prices began to recover during the year.

Order intake grew strongly in the power and in the general industry markets. The latter was supported by the consolidation of Geka and PC Cox.

Order levels decreased in the Americas and in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) due to the oil and gas market downturn and, in Europe, due to the weaker performance of the electromechanical business. Order intake significantly increased in the Asia-Pacific, mainly supported by China, which recovered from the very low order levels last year.

Lower sales impacted operational EBITA

Sales amounted to CHF 2 876.7 million, a decline of 2.0% (nominal: -3.2%). Negative currency translation effects totaled CHF 34.5 million and the effect of acquisitions came to CHF 90.6 million.

In 2016, strong growth in the power market and the effect from acquisitions were offset primarily by the significant sales decline in the oil and gas market. Sales in the water market were also below the prior-year level, mainly due to a low-starting backlog and timing of projects.

Sales increased in the EMEA, while the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions were down from the previous year. Consequently, the share of sales in emerging markets slid from 40% in 2015 down to 38% in 2016.

Operational EBITA (opEBITA) totalled CHF 238.9 million compared with CHF 254.1 million in 2015, a decrease of 4.4% (nominal: - 6.0%). Savings from the SFP programme helped partially offset the lower sales volume and the negative pricing impact.

Operational ROSA (opROSA) decreased to 8.3% compared with 8.6% in 2015. Lower core net income, strong free cash flow.

In 2016, net income amounted to CHF 60.1 million compared with CHF 75.0 million in the previous year. Core net income excluding the tax-adjusted effects of non-operational items totaled CHF 153.8 million compared with CHF 175.0 million in 2015.

Basic earnings per share decreased from CHF 2.17 in 2015 to CHF 1.73 in 2016.

Free cash flow amounted to CHF 200.5 million compared with CHF 155.8 million reported in the prior year.

This was mainly driven by dynamic net working capital management, but also by lower tax payments and the fact that a substantial portion of restructuring expenses recorded in 2016 will only be paid out in 2017.

Organizational changes

In 2016, Sulzer acquired Geka, headquartered in Bechhofen, Germany. Geka produces applicator devices for the cosmetics industry and has an emerging business in healthcare.

Further, Sulzer took over PC Cox Group Ltd, a leading manufacturer of industrial dispensers headquartered in Newbury, UK. The combination of the business unit Sulzer Mixpac Systems, Geka, and PC Cox is being reported as the new division Applicator Systems as of 1 January 2017.

Moreover, the company prepared for the transfer of the spare parts business from the Pumps Equipment division to the Rotating Equipment Services division.

The integration will be carried out in 2017 and will allow customers to benefit from a single access point for services and parts.

Outlook for 2017

Sulzer expects that the oil and gas market, which accounted for approximately half of its revenue before recent acquisitions, will remain challenging in 2017 and that pricing pressure will persist throughout the year.

Early signs of an impending recovery of oil CAPEX should only translate into a commercial rebound for Sulzer in 2018. Sulzer's other businesses are expected to grow slightly in 2017.

This is projected to lead to a broadly stable organic order level for the company relative to 2016, supplemented by additional volume from newly acquired businesses.

Sulzer expects its SFP program to deliver incremental cost savings in 2017 in the range of CHF 40 to 60 million. The company confirms its overall target of CHF 200 million from 2018 onwards.

Proposals by the Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting

The board of directors will propose an unchanged ordinary dividend of CHF 3.50 per share (2015: CHF 3.50) at the Annual General Meeting on 6 April 2017. This represents a 3.3% dividend yield.

Navigating the ‘Industry 4.0’ Digital Transformation Using Mobile Computing Solutions

The only constant factor in fields of manufacturing, warehousing and distribution is change, whether that's changing market conditions, inventory levels, production schedules etc.

Adding to these is the looming shift to Industry 4.0 technology architectures, or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

Though you're probably still evaluating the potential ROI for digital innovations like cloud computing and predictive analytics, mobility is now mandatory.

In fact, 85% of manufacturers believe mobile solutions are more important this year than ever before, according to VDC Research.

That's because mobile tools like rugged tablets are essential to feeding data from information workers on the shop floor to multiple workflow information systems, such as ERPs and warehouse management systems (WMS), for real-time synchronisation and analysis.

They are also the most expedient way to distribute processed data back to workers to facilitate accurate task completion or initiate workflow actions.

In other words, mobile computers are a fundamental component of the new Industry 4.0 / IIoT 'survival pack' needed to protect your operation's livelihood despite fluctuating market conditions, increasing competition and evolving customer demands.

But, just like calories aren't indicative of a food's nutritional value, being 'rugged' or even 'mobile' is not indicative of a computer's modern-day value.

Why 'Best in Class' is always better - and not necessarily more expensive

It might seem easier to deploy 'one-vendor' mobility bundles, especially with tight budgets and limited IT resources.

But bundled solutions, especially the ones that are pre-packaged with plug-and-play hardware, software, accessory and security components, are not always adaptive to change, and can quickly fail to meet your cost, performance and longevity expectations.
If they're not compatible with future technology platforms, you'll have to compromise.

In contrast, a custom-assembled, best-in-class mobile solution can give you the workable foundation you need to adapt to ongoing operational changes with a framework that is flexible, but stable; future-proof but scalable, starting with the computing device's lifecycle.

Your workflow needs are not going to be the same as every other player in the market, and your tech systems will likely need constant refinement.

Best-in-class solutions are designed to fulfil the needs of your entire team without inflicting disruptive changes on workers or processes. And though you may seemingly get more "tools" for a "lower cost" in a bundled solution, consider if they are really the right tools for your workers.

More importantly, consider the total cost of ownership. Ask yourself, what do you really need to support every information worker and every specialized workflow in your facility?

A custom-built solution allows you to identify what's most important to your team, such as unique software, security and control capabilities, and obtain the precise tools needed without paying extra costs for tools that you'll never use.

Next, consider the workers that will actually be using these mobile solutions day-in and day-out. Mobile tools are designed to improve efficiencies for your team, but let's face it, your team is busy running your operation and doesn't necessarily have time to on board with unknown systems and complex devices.

They need a versatile mobile PC that can be integrated into their current workflow, whether on foot or on a forklift, and that can deliver real-time data throughout the day.

According to VDC Research, the demand for mobile solutions that are more intuitive and easier to learn is one of the current key pressures for warehouse environments undergoing mobility transformations.

Ultimately, the reason that you're investing in new mobile technologies is to keep pace with rapidly shifting supply chain dependencies and boost operational excellence, and it would be counterproductive to invest in hardware that can't elevate your key performance indicators (KPIs).

At the end of the day, you don't want to waste your time or money on technology that is so disruptive to your workforce that it creates additional downtime.

Black & Veatch selects Sweco to design and commission DEMON at Knostrop plant in UK

UK-based engineering, environmental and design consultancy Sweco has been selected by US-based Black & Veatch to design, commission and guarantee the de-ammonification (DEMON) process at Knostrop sludge treatment facility in the UK.

Located on Yorkshire Water, on the outskirts of Leeds, the sludge treatment facility will see Sweco utilise expertise developed in the Netherlands and will serve as the largest overall capacity DEMON project in the country.

Sweco technical director Philip Wiltshire said: “This technology will also provide Yorkshire Water with the option to make further energy savings through the implementation of mainstream DEMON in the coming years.

“Mainstream DEMON (also known as ‘cold anammox’) can offer energy savings of between 25% and 30% in activated sludge plant aeration systems, as well as improving the quality of effluent.”

Currently, the Knostrop sewage treatment plant is undergoing redevelopment works, led Black & Veatch, to facilitate an enhanced and effective treatment of sludge on the site.

As part of the revamp project, Sweco will be responsible for designing, commissioning and guaranteeing the liquor treatment process at the facility.

While the design for the DEMON process is slated to be completed by April this year, the installation by Black & Veatch is expected to be concluded in March next year.

Co-ordinated by Sweco, the process commissioning of the sewage treatment plant is expected to begin in February next year and the plant will be handed over to Yorkshire Water in November.

For almost 100 years, Knostrop wastewater treatment facility has been treating sewage from domestic properties as well as industries.

Once installed at Knostrop, the DEMON technology will ensure the removal of 85% ammonia from liquors produced by the new sludge dewatering plant at the facility without any pH correction or carbon dosing.

Operating at maximum capacity, the plant will be able to remove 3,150kg of ammonia every day.
