Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a AED248 m ($68m) contract to supply, extend and commission 40km of water pipelines in the UAE city.
Under the terms of the contract, 600-1,200mm extension of glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) main water pipes will be carried out along Al Qudra Street and the Dubai to Al Ain highway.
The extension is aimed at improving water-flow capacity and supply water to required development projects being carried out in the areas.
The project will see an increase in the water-flow capacity with additional pipelines in Khawaneej 2 and other parts of the city during emergencies.
Effective and continuous control of the main water transport network will also be ensured through monitoring systems and remote-controlled valves that are expected to identify faults in the control centre, leading to decrease of water losses.
DEWA managing director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: “This supports our ambitious strategy and plans to meet the needs of the comprehensive development of electricity and water for the Dubai Plan 2021, and meets the highest standards of availability, reliability and efficiency, to meet customer demand.
“We are working to increase production and improve operational efficiencies, and increase the flow of water in several parts of Dubai, and as a contingency against any emergencies.”
The project further includes multiple sites for main transmission pipeline connections, enhanced water flow, continuous water access and increased pressure in the network to meet the growing demand for water.
It is expected to require up to 30 months for implementation.

Water treatment technology provider CycloPure has revealed through a new study that its micropollutant polymer, CD-MP, returned better results than activated carbon in the removal of micropollutants from water.
The CD-MP polymer is the first of the company's enhanced adsorption materials designed using its cyclodextrin technology.
As per the findings of that study, the polymer outperformed several conventional adsorbents in the removal of eight micropollutants, including bisphenol A (BPA), the pesticide metolachlor, and the estrogen steroid ethinyl estradiol.
The test included the comparative analysis between the performance of the CD-MP polymer and coconut shell activated carbon (CCAC) in the removal of 83 pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals from water.
The company noted that with regard to contaminant concentrations of one microgram per liter (1 ppb), the CD-MP polymer outmatched activated carbon in each metric in both batch and flow-through tests.
CycloPure co-founder Dr Will Dichtel said: "As with the Nature study, we again saw rapid adsorption of contaminants in a near instantaneous manner.
"These results are an important step in the commercialisation of this vital material.
“We have now shown removal effectiveness against a diverse group of micropollutants, comprised of industrial chemicals, pesticides and pharmaceutical compounds.”
The company observed that the test results have great implications for water treatment.
It further added that the polymer showcased effective removal against a number of known and putative endocrine disruptors.
Besides, it is claimed that CD-MP has proved to be effective in the removal of the toxic pesticides Atrazine and Chlorpyrifos.
CycloPure CEO Frank Cassou said: "Uniquely effective, sustainably made, and renewable, it is now time to get this product to market.
“We are full speed ahead to scale-up reaction procedures to handle commercial volumes and requirements.”
Pennsylvania American Water has announced upgrades of around 6,500-ft of water main in several Luzerne County communities to improve reliability, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting.
The system improvements will replace water main established in 1906, and will cost about $1.3m.
Work related to replacement of four- and six-inch cast-iron water main with new eight-inch ductile iron pipe commenced recently in Plymouth, Hanover Township, Kingston, West Wyoming and Wilkes-Barre.
It is expected that the water main installation, including transfer of all customer services, final restoration, and paving to be completed by late summer.
The company noted that during construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, as well as discoloured water, in addition to lower than normal water pressure.
It further added that in order to mitigate these temporary inconveniences, crews will carry out work swiftly.
Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, is an investor-owned water utility, providing water and/or wastewater services to around 2.3 million people.

llinois American Water’s almost $8.5m investment in the Metro East water distribution system is close to completion.
This investment covers over 2.6 miles of water main installation on Front Street in East St. Louis.
In 2016, the company finished phase one of the project.
The first phase included installing approximately 3,500 feet of 36-inch ductile iron water main and approximately 4,500 feet of 24-inch ductile iron water main.
Illinois American Water engineering director Jeff Kaiser said: “The water mains installed in 2016 were large, transmission water mains, critical to delivering treated water from our East St. Louis water treatment to our Metro East customers.
“Upgrading this infrastructure helps to ensure reliable water service for public health and fire protection to not only East St. Louis, but also Belleville, Sauget and other surrounding communities we serve.”
Second phase of the project is almost close to completion and includes installing about 2,500 feet of 16-inch ductile iron water main.
Besides, aound 3,700ft of 24-inch existing water main is being lined with 20-inch fusible PVC water main.
Lining the water main, instead of replacing it, cuts down costs to customers and avoids disruption to surrounding infrastructure.
Kaiser added that following the completion of water main installation, Illinois American Water will carry out water flow and water quality tests so that standards are met.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
According to the US EPA, the country’s water utilities will require to make over $335bn in infrastructure investments over the next two decades to ensure public health. These investments include replacing thousands of miles of pipe and upgrades to treatment plants, storage tanks and other assets.
