CH2M secures contract for research on benefits of big data analytics to water utilities

Water Environment & Reuse Foundation has awarded a contract recently to CH2M to conduct research on the topic of ‘Designing Sensor Networks and Locations on an Urban Sewershed Scale’.

Internet of Things (IoT) is spurring rise in sensing technologies and communication platforms. This in turn is leading to development of advanced sensors, which will provide access to new data streams for the wastewater industry.

The research is intended to offer a basic roadmap for the application of remote sensor technology to help tackle the challenges faced by wastewater utilities.

The aim of the research is to understand the existing capabilities and state of designing and implementing sensor networks in urban sewersheds.

This study will define the issues faced by wastewater utilities including that of underground storage to reduce wet weather overflows, flow to pump optimisation, overflow and infiltration/inflow issues, water quality monitoring, and deployment of early warning systems.

The research team will design an online survey and carry out interviews of organisations focused on smart water systems to yield quantifiable indicators of the present and future state.

Finally, the study is expected to offer an understanding of big data analytics and its advantages to water and wastewater utilities.

These results will enable utilities to gain new information to make better informed decisions, reduce operating costs.

The researchers, which will include from Clean Water Services, will use several case studies to demonstrate capital deferment, targeted mediation, requirements management, and frameworks for implementation.

Making use of IoT sensing technology will help operators understand how to use real-time data to effectively manage their assets, proactively flag risk to avoid failure.

CH2M is a technology and applied research consulting firm focusing on water resources and smart cities, including urban planning and utilities.

Clean Water Services is a public utility serving urban Washington County, Oregon. It treats 60 million gallons of wastewater per day.

This project is scheduled to be completed next year.

Water Environment & Reuse Foundation is a nonprofit organisation formed last July following the merger of  the Water Environment Research Foundation and the WateReuse Research Foundation.
