ST ESTEVAM: Just metres away from the ferry crossing at St Estevam island, one can hear the murmuring of youngsters and the rustling of mangrove leaves. At closer look, some are squatting near the mangrove roots while others are standing with their feet deep in the marsh, meticulously extracting plastic and glass bottles, footwear and cement bags among a myriad other items discarded there. They sometimes use hooks and gloves to do the job, but at other times, the young volunteers and environment lovers simply make do with their bare hands to remove waste that has sunk in the mushy soil.
