Increasing factory and auto emissions disrupt natural cycle in East China Sea

China's rapid ascent to global economic superpower is taking a toll on some of its ancient ways. For millennia, people have patterned their lives and diets around the vast fisheries of the East China Sea, but now those waters are increasingly threatened by human-caused, harmful algal blooms that choke off vital fish populations, according to a new study.

The making of Antarctica

A group of researchers suggest that the best way to understand the creation of the glaciers in Antarctica is by linking two competing theories about their origins. They argue that the deepening of the Drake Passage changed patterns of ocean circulation which in turn resulted in a drop in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to a threshold that allowed glaciation to take place.

New ocean observations improve understanding of motion

Oceanographers commonly calculate large scale surface ocean circulation from satellite sea level information using a concept called 'geostrophy', which describes the relationship between oceanic surface flows and sea level gradient. Conversely, researchers rely on data from in-water current meters to measure smaller scale motion. New research has determined from observational data the length scale at which using sea level height no longer offers a reliable calculation of circulation.

Unexpected result: Ocean acidification can also promote shell formation

More carbon dioxide in the air also acidifies the oceans. It seemed to be the logical conclusion that shellfish and corals will suffer, because chalk formation becomes more difficult in more acidic seawater. But now a group of scientists discovered to their own surprise that some tiny unicellular shellfish (foraminifera) make better shells in an acidic environment. This is a completely new insight.

How do bone-eating worms eat bones?

The deep-sea Osedax bone-devouring worms could easily have been the poster child for Deep-Sea News instead of the Giant Squid.    I love them because Osedax these little soft sacks resemble snotty little flowers.  Perhaps that’s why the first named species got the Latin name of Osedax mucofloris, literally bone devouring mucus flower.

The females are all business sex of the Osedax, the gender that actually “eats” the bones of whales and other vertebrates on the deep seafloor.  The female worms have dwarf males, up to 114 in Osedax rubiplumus, fruiting around inside of their body. And the larger, older ladies have larger harems. Everyone loves a cougar.

Figure from Vrijenhoek et al 2009 in BMC Biology.

Osedax is Latin for “bone devourer”.  Not quite accurate as they don’t feed on the actual carbonated hydroxyapatite, i.e. bone mineral, but rather the fats within the bone matrix. What’s not to love about these wee beasties that live off the lipids stored in bones of long-dead whales lying on the seafloor? And any bone will do.  Osedax will inhabit just about any bone, including steak bones thrown overboard as waste.

Osedax have no mouth, anus, or gut. The females extend roots into the bones to tap into these nutrient reserves.  Vertebrate bones are made of both organic and inorganic components including the main inorganic component calcium phosphate.  V-H+ ATPase and CA antibodies That is a mouthful so we will go with VATCA which sounds like Vodka with faked Russian accent.  So VATCA is expressed in vertebrates and allows through resorption of bones through acidification. Osedax expresses VATCA, potentially the only invertebrate to do so.  Because…yeah…invertebrates are boneless and don’t need bone-dissolving acids.  So basically Osedax just dissolve dead whale parts with their roots…by using acid. Acid…yep I said acid.  As if Osedax could get any more bad ass, I’m now thinking of the Alien queen.

New work suggests that the epidermal cells also express all kinds of proteinases, and enzyme that performs breaks down proteins by hydrolysis of peptide bonds.  In Osedax, 24 genes were found to code for just one type of proteinases, the MMP.  In the common fruit fly there are only two MMP genes and a common sea squirt just seven.  These epidermal cells also turn on a whole bunch of transporter genes suggesting they also uptake these nutrients just as well…like plant roots except you know some post-apocalyptic, weird animal-plant, zombie thing.

A rug that eats bones, has harems, and secretes acids but otherwise a normal shag rug.

I’ll leave you with this.  Thousands of bone-eating females will infest a whale carcass.  So many will accumulate the whale bones will appear to be covered in circa 1970’s red shag rug. A rug that eats bones, has harems, and secretes acids but otherwise a normal shag rug.

Am I a Robot or am I a Plankter?

I just learned that the ocean robots I work with are taller than me. Since being insecure about size seems to be a thing now, I clearly need to surround myself by other which inflates alternative height bigly. This is why I NEED this navy of tiny ocean robots

Although I was hoping this robotic fleet was deployed for total ocean domination, their true goal was to pretend that they were plankton. Which means they have to act like a plankton. Some plankton are able to move around a little bit, but most of the time are just pushed about by water. For these robots to mimic the movements of plankton, the trick here was to make these Lagrangian floats follow a particular patch of water that is being pushed about by currents and waves. By deploying 16 robots, then you can see how these forces create the plankton patches that have been seen in the ocean.

A completely unrelated phytoplankton patch in the Bering Sea. BRING THE ROBOTS HERE!

Which is exactly what this tiny swarm did! And, be still my physical oceanographer heart, the robotic plankton patchiness was caused by internal waves. When the group was in the wave crest, they spread apart! When the group was in the wave through, they clumped together! Exactly as an internal wave should command them.

Let’s not forget the awesome tech that made this happen. Being able to follow a water blob isn’t easy. The robot needs to continually monitor its external surroundings and adjust its buoyancy to stay at a constant depth. And tracking the position of anything underwater? You need to do it with sound. Here they used an array of five sound sources around the swarm that talked to it with special acoustical pings. But to keep the robots small, they couldn’t answer back. They just listened and recorded a sequential round of pings from the sources, which was downloaded later. The location is then determined from the difference in time between when the five pings were transmitted and when they were received. This is some elegant signal processing people.

I only have one suggestion, you hand all the robots over to me and I call them Martini’s Tini Ocean Robot Navy. I shall appear tall, they shall remain small and together we shall drift over all.

Fight against the #EPAfreeze – Because you don’t want sewage on your beaches, right?

Would you want your taxi driver using a paper road map from 1892? Or would you rather he plug in the route on his Google Map iPhone app?

You just got off a 14-hour flight from Australia, you’re exhausted and sore, and counting down the seconds until you can crawl into the soft comfort of your memory foam mattress. You want to get home as fast as possible, and any further delay is unacceptable.

In this scenario, if your taxi driver pulled out a faded historical road map, you would literally shout at him “Are you fucking kidding me? Is this a joke?”. Old maps list wagon trails, not highways, since the modern interstate system wasn’t built until the 1950s. In another scenario, maybe your taxi driver agrees to use Google Maps, but he turns off the traffic settings and also takes away your own smartphone so you can’t see where you’re going. He might be driving down back roads on purpose, choosing to ramp up the mileage and ramp up his final fare to rake in the cash.

Any of these above scenarios would really suck. They’re not cool. You should DEFINITELY not stand for them. You also shouldn’t stand for the gag order (#EPAgag) and grants freeze (#EPAfreeze) that’s happening this week at the EPA – because the results will be sickeningly similar to the above taxi driver scenario.

NPR reports this morning that peer-reviewed research coming out of the EPA may soon face a case-by-case review before it gets cleared for release into the public domain. This is exactly what corporations do when they fund research – do you think tobacco companies would approve studies confirming that cigarettes cause cancer? Nope, they would bury the science and ensures it never sees the light of day – and that’s exactly what the Trump administration wants to happen at the EPA. Climate change facts? Bury them. Gag the scientists. The difference is that corporations don’t fund the science at the EPA – YOU FUND IT, as a taxpayer and US citizen, and you should have a say in how your tax money is spent:

Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency who want to publish or present their scientific findings likely will need to have their work reviewed on a “case by case basis” before it can be disseminated, according to a spokesman for the agency’s transition team.

Any review would directly contradict the agency’s current scientific integrity policy, which was published in 2012. It prohibits “all EPA employees, including scientists, managers and other Agency leadership from suppressing, altering, or otherwise impeding the timely release of scientific findings or conclusions.”

The EPA funds a stunning amount of stuff that effects your everyday life – the EPA monitors beach health (so you can swim in a seweage-free ocean!), water quality in lakes and rivers (so you can fish there!), air quality (don’t wanna taste smog on your run, right?), and even programs on Native American reservations to help with initiatives like recycling and sustainability.

If you want to know what the EPA funds in your local area, 1) Click here and enter your ZIP code to find your congressional district, and then 2) Go to the EPA search tool and search for grants awarded to your congressional district (you only have to fill out two boxes – your district number and state). The list of EPA search results will show you exactly what type of projects and how much $$ has been allocated to your town in the past few years.

Finally, CALL YOUR CONGRESSPERSON AND SENATORS to let them know that the #EPAfreeze and #EPAgag is NOT OK! All us scientists at Deep-Sea News are steaming mad, and you should be too. Click here to find contact info for your state senator. And click here and type in your ZIP code for your local congressperson in the House of Representatives. Phone calls are the best way to get in touch – inundate their district and DC offices with phone calls. Phone calls are scary for me as a millennial, but then again so is that dodgy taxi driver who wants to take me home using unpaved wagon trails and historical maps. Make a stand, make your voice heard.
