Writings on the SeaWall: Squidtoons

As science communicators, we are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to translate the ramblings of the ivory tower into a relatable and accessible public dialogue. In my experience, our strongest ally in this endeavor lies in the artists, musicians, and storytellers within our communities. “The Writing on the Sea-Wall” series seeks to highlight the skilled, artisans and projects that help us in our ongoing mission to connect people to science through tangible and impacting messages.

Everyone gets into science communication for different reasons, but to date this might be my favorite:

“Some senators were being dicks and criticizing physiology science as wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars.”

Garfield Kwan, of the dynamic duo behind the ocean comic Squidtoons, was working in a physiology lab at the time when Senator Tom Coburn’s scaling 2011 critique of “wasteful” NSF funding was released. Little did the Senator know that putting on blast the epic physiological research that involved running shrimp on treadmills would inspire Kwan to explore connecting a larger audience to science in his own unique way.

Thus, Squidtoons was born. In collaboration with scientific illustrator Dana Song, Squidtoons is an ocean comic dedicated to translating scientific research into engaging infographics to educate the pubic about science, provide educators with teaching tools, and support scientists with compelling illustrations. Infused with a significant dose of humor and pop culture, each comic is the product of an extensive amount of research and expert scientific review. The illustrations are as accurate as they are dazzling. We here at DSN were fans of Squidtoons before it was cool.

This year Kwan and Song expanded their inky, scicom-ic empire by publishing their first ever Squidtoons book “illustrating science with farts, burps, and giggles.” Containing 120 pages of the Squidtoons “best of” playlist, the book is a fun romp for both kids and adults alike. Garfield reflects on his hopes for the book, “Squidtoons has the potential to be a great outreach tool for researchers around the world, as well as a great platform for the public to understand science by researchers from around the world.”

Get yours today just in time to dazzle your relatives for the holidays with all of your ocean science nerd jokes- courtesy of Squidtoons!

Quirky glacial behavior explained

In August 2012, the Jakobshavn Glacier was flowing and breaking off into the sea at record speeds, three times faster than in previous years. As the glacier flowed faster, it became thinner and more unstable and in a twist, a pileup of thick ice replenished the glacier's terminus, slowing it down again. New work explaining the fast-then-slow movement of Jakobshavn may help scientists better predict how tidewater glaciers contribute to sea level rise.

A Wormy (and Nerdy) Conquest of the Deep

There are all kinds of reasons why Paulo Bonifácio and  Lénaïck Menot have nerd clout.  There is, of course, the fact that they just described and named 17 new species of polychaete worm.  That is 17 new species completely unknown to science.   The work comes from the exploration of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ), the largest polymetallic nodule field in the world, with ~6 million km2 of seabed lying between 4000 and 6000 m depth.

But true nerd credit was earned by the pair for the names that were given to these new species blending their love of nerd culture and taxonomy.

So first up is hat tip to Game of Thrones.

Abyssarya acus gen. nov., sp. nov.

This genus is dedicated to Arya Stark, one of P.B.’s favourite characters in the novel ‘A song of ice and fire’ by George R. R. Martin. The name is composed by ‘abyss’ from the Latin word ‘ăbyssus’ meaning ‘bottomless’ and Arya….The species name came from Latin ‘ăcŭs’ meaning ‘needle’. It refers to modified neurochaetae present on segment 2 similar to a ‘crochet needle’.

And perhaps this little nod to White Walkers

Bathyfauvelia glacigena sp. nov.

The species name glacigena means ‘ice-born’, which is composed by borrowing from the Latin word ‘glăcĭēs’ meaning ‘ice’ and the Greek word ‘gennó, γεννώ’ meaning ‘born’. It refers to white ganglia like ice.

And where there are the ice borns there are the fire borns! Surely these are clans in a fantasy fiction somewhere?

Bathyfauvelia ignigena sp. nov.

Species named from the ‘ignĭgĕna’, a poetical epithet of Bacchus meaning ‘fire-born’, which is composed by borrowing from the Latin word ‘ignis’ meaning ‘fire’ and the Greek word ‘gennó, γεννώ’ meaning ‘born’.

And my only comment about this is YASSSSS!

Hodor hodor gen. nov., sp. nov.

This genus [and species are] dedicated to Hodor, one of P.B.’s favourite characters in the novel ‘A song of ice and fire’ by George R. R. Martin.

And in a moment of cross exchange sure to rial up nerds everywhere is Hodor anduril

The species name is derived from the sword named ‘andúril’ meaning ‘Flame of the West’ and belonging to Aragorn in the novel ‘The lord of the rings’ by J. R. R. Tolkien. It refers to the sword-like modified neurochaetae present in this species.

And let’s not leave out the hipster worm

Macellicephaloides moustachu sp. nov.

The species name came from the French word ‘moustachu’ meaning ‘with a moustache’. It refers to the palps directed ventrally, giving the impression that the worm has a moustache.

Now to strut that mythology knowledge.

Nu aakhu gen. nov., sp. nov.

In the ancient Egyptian religion, ‘Nu’ refers to the deification of the primordial watery abyss whence all life came, also known as ‘the Father of the Gods’ and ‘the Eldest’….Again, in the ancient Egyptian religion, ‘áakhu’ is one of the elements that compose the human soul. An ‘áakhu’ is the glorified spirit or a blessed soul which has passed the final judgement (the Weighing of the Heart). The term refers to the translucent character of the body of this worm.

However, the best name is this loving tribute.

Bathyeliasona mariaae sp. nov.

This species is dedicated to Maria Silva, mother of P.B., for her love.

Paulo Bonifácio, Lénaïck Menot; New genera and species from the Equatorial Pacific provide phylogenetic insights into deep-sea Polynoidae (Annelida), Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, , zly063, https://doi.org/10.1093/zoolinnean/zly063

Whale songs' changing pitch may be response to population, climate changes

Blue whales have been dropping pitch incrementally over several decades, but the cause has remained a mystery. A new study finds a seasonal variation in the whales' pitch correlated with breaking sea ice in the southern Indian Ocean. The new research also extends the mysterious long-term falling pitch to related baleen whales and rules out noise pollution as the cause of the global long-term trend, according to the study's authors.

Combined local and global actions could lessen impacts of change in marine environment

Increased oil and gas activities could combine with ocean warming and acidification to have a significant negative impact on marine organisms, a new study suggests.

A team of researchers led by Dr Renée K. Bechmann at the NORCE Norwegian Research Centre conducted one of the first studies to explore the impact of multiple stressors in the marine environment.

The study's lead author, Dr Maj Arnberg, carried out the research as part of her PhD under the supervision of Professor John Spicer and Dr Piero Calosi, both affiliated to the Marine Biology and Ecology Research Centre at the University of Plymouth, together with Dr Sam Dupont at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) at the University of Gothenburg.

Writing in Scientific Reports, a journal published by the Nature group, they say that effective management of local issues such as oil exposure from a spill situation could mitigate the detrimental impact of future global environmental changes.

And they believe international recognition of this fact would in turn empower and encourage local decision makers to act, increasing natural populations and environment resilience in the process.

Their working hypothesis was that while exposure to global and local drivers individually would significantly negatively affect larval early developmental stages, combined exposure would lead to a more severe impact than observed for single drivers.

The study employed a scenario-based, collapsed design to investigate the impact of one local acute stressor (North Sea crude oil) and two chronic global drivers (pH for ocean acidification and temperature for ocean warming).

It then explored the individual and collective impacts on aspects of the larval stages of two key invertebrates, the northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and the green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis).

Both shrimp and urchin larvae were negatively impacted by ocean acidification and ocean warming resulting in decreased growth, while acute exposure to oil also reduced growth, feeding and activity in larvae of both species.

Researchers say the study highlights the importance of adjusting regulation associated with oil spill prevention to maximize the resilience of marine organisms to predicted future global conditions.

Dr Arnberg, now a Research Scientist at NORCE, said: "This paper shows that both local and global drivers had negative effects on the larval stages of two keystone species, northern shrimp and green sea urchin. No interactions were observed between local and global drivers and the combined effects, of the two drivers are approximately equal to the sum of their separate effects. It is therefore important to reduce the risk of environmental effects from local pollution to protect the marine ecosystem in a high CO2 world."

MBERC is one of the world's leading research centres examining the impact of multiple stressors on marine organisms and environments, and undergraduate and postgraduate students are regularly involved in that research.

Professor of Marine Biology John Spicer, an author on the current paper, said: "The findings of our study suggest that when it comes to environmental protection Patrick Geddes' famous phrase, 'act local, think global' may be extended to 'act local, act global'. Local and global challenges face life in our oceans and it is probably inappropriate to consider them as independent from one another."

Drones offer ability to find, ID and count marine megafauna

New research from North Carolina State University demonstrates that consumer-grade drones are effective tools for monitoring marine species across multiple sites in the wild. The work shows that the technology can be a valuable platform for scientists and conservationists interested in studying populations of sharks, rays, sea turtles and other marine megafauna.

"We found that drones can be used to count and make species-level identifications of marine species, particularly in shallow marine environments," says Enie Hensel, a Ph.D. candidate at NC State and first author of a paper on the work.

"Demonstrating the viability of drones for this work matters, because these are inexpensive tools for collecting accurate abundance estimates," Hensel says. "And those estimates are important for both informing the development of conservation efforts and for assessing the effectiveness of those efforts.

"Drone surveys are also a good way to monitor shallow water, megafauna species because they are not intrusive," Hensel says. "More traditional monitoring methods -- such as boat surveys or gill nets -- are more invasive, and have the potential to harm individuals or alter their movement patterns."

Previous studies using drones to monitor marine species have focused on single sites. The recent work from NC State evaluated multiple sites, demonstrating that drones can be used to assess environmental variables that may be responsible for population differences between locations. For example, drones may be used to help target conservation efforts on sites that have the most value in terms of supporting specific species.

The researchers also showed that drones are effective at sites with varying degrees of water clarity.

To assess the effectiveness of the drones, researchers placed fake sharks underwater at two sites with different water clarity. Drone footage allowed researchers to identify all of the decoys at both sites.

"We chose grey shark decoys because they would be the most difficult to spot in these environments, but we were able to spot them all," Hensel says.

In field testing, researchers were also able to make species-level identifications of lemon, nurse and bonnethead sharks, as well as southern stingrays and spotted eagle rays. The drone footage also allowed researchers to identify sea turtles, though they had difficulty differentiating between hawksbill and green sea turtles.

"One reason we chose these sites, all of which were on Great Abaco Island in The Bahamas, was because The Bahamas are interested in using several of the sites as a pilot for a managed conservation effort," Hensel says. "Our surveys provide baseline data for marine megafauna abundances within these newly established parks and we show that drones offer a new management tool for the park service of The Bahamas. And, of course, the technology certainly opens doors for us to explore a range of conservation issues."

New insight into ocean-atmosphere interaction and subsequent cloud formation

Organic compounds undergo drastic variations in their chemical composition as they transfer from the ocean's surface to atmospheric aerosols which act as nuclei to form clouds.

Aerosols, which are suspended fine solid particles or liquid droplets, play significant roles in triggering climate change by scattering or absorbing sunlight, while affecting the cloud formation and precipitation process by serving as nuclei to form clouds. Organic compounds account for up to 90 percent of the constituents of aerosols, and their composition is a pivotal factor in promoting or suppressing cloud formation.

Seawater covers about 70 percent of the Earth's surface area. Organic compounds produced by microbial activities in surface seawater are released into the atmosphere by sea spray, which is thought to influence the constitution of aerosols. However, virtually no information about organic matter at the ocean-atmosphere boundary has been available due to measurement difficulties, making it hard to understand how organic matter in seawater affects the atmospheric composition.

A group of scientists led by Assistant Professor Yuzo Miyazaki of Hokkaido University's Institute of Low Temperature Science, investigated the atmospheric aerosols and seawater to observe variations in organic compounds as it transfers from the seawater to the air in the Oyashio Current and its coastal regions of the western subarctic Pacific. The cruise measurements on the research vessel Hakuho Maru took place just before the phytoplankton bloom in early spring of March 2015.

Sea spray aerosols were selected using the team's original method based on the stable carbon isotope ratio of water-soluble organic carbon and concentrations of glucose as a molecular tracer in marine aerosols together with local surface wind speed data. The researchers measured and compared the ratio of protein-like organic matter, which easily biologically decomposes, and humic-like substances, which hardly decompose, in both sea spray aerosols and surface seawater.

According to the group's findings, sea spray aerosols contained a larger proportion of humic-like substances than protein-like compounds compared to surface seawater, regardless of the aerosol size, in every sample the researchers examined. The results suggest significant decomposition of protein-like organic substances and/or preferential formation of humic-like substances in sea spray aerosols when organic matter transfers from seawater to atmospheric aerosols within about 24 hours.

Humic-like, hard-to-decompose organic matter is believed to suppress the formation of clouds from sea spray aerosols. "Our study could provide vital information to assess, with high precision, how global warming-triggered change in the volume, chemical composition, and activity of microorganisms in the sea surface will affect future cloud formation by releasing organic matter into the atmosphere," says Yuzo Miyazaki.

Ernst Frankel, shipping expert and professor emeritus of ocean engineering, dies at 95

Ernst G. Frankel MME ’60, SM ‘60, professor emeritus of ocean engineering who served on MIT’s faculty for 36 years, passed away on Nov. 18 at the age of 95. Frankel, who was also a former professor of management at the Sloan School of Management, was a leading expert in shipping, shipbuilding, and port management.

Born in 1923 in Beuthen, Germany, Frankel served in the Royal Navy during World War II. He also served in the Israeli navy in 1948. After the war, he pursued his bachelor’s degree in marine engineering at London University. He worked for eight years as chief engineer of Zim Navigation Company in Israel, before moving to America and enrolling in MIT to study ocean engineering.

He graduated MIT in 1960 with a master’s of science in ocean engineering and a master’s of marine mechanical engineering. In his graduate thesis, he examined the effects of surge, pitch, and heave on semisubmerged displacement vessels in regular waves. After graduating, he joined the faculty of the then-named Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1995.

Throughout his career, Frankel authored 21 books and over 700 academic papers. In 1971, he was named head of the Interdepartmental Commodity Transportation and Economic Development Laboratory, which he also helped establish.

In addition to his work at MIT, Frankel acted as an advisor to a number of governments, international organizations, and shipping companies. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Neptune Orient Lines, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, as well as an advisor to the Panama Canal Authority. He also served as a port, shipping, and aviation advisor to the World Bank, a senior advisor on ports to the secretary general of the International Maritime Organization, and a member of the U.N.-sponsored World Maritime University’s Visiting Committee.

Frankel received a number of accolades throughout his career including a Gold Medal from the government of Great Britain in 1956. He was also a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the Transportation Science Section Council.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Frankel expanded his expertise beyond ocean engineering and naval architecture, setting his sights on business and economics. He earned a master’s of business administration in operations management and a doctor of business administration in systems management from Boston University. He also received a PhD in transport economics from the University of Wales in 1985.

This foundation in economics and business management led to a dual appointment in the Sloan School of Management. In addition to acting as professor of ocean engineering, in the early 1990s Frankel was named a professor of management at Sloan.

After his retirement in 1995, Frankel remained active in both teaching and research. When Elon Musk announced the Hyperloop concept in 2013, Frankel received some unexpected media attention for research he conducted two decades prior. In the early 1990s, Frankel led a team that designed a vacuum tube which could possibly enable travel between Boston and New York City in 40 minutes — a concept similar to what Musk has been hoping to achieve.

In an interview with the BBC in 2014, Frankel said, “The advantage of a vacuum tube is that you can achieve high speeds. … We built a half-mile long tube at the playing fields of MIT, evacuated it, and then shot things through it in order to measure what sort of velocities we could obtain.”

Funeral services were held in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Nov. 20.
